STRUCTURE
FUNCTION
DEOXY/OXY BLOOD
LEFT ATRIUM
-collects oxygen-rich blood coming back from the lungs and forces through the mitral valve and to the left ventricle.
OXY BLOOD
LEFT VENTRICLE
-largest and strongest chamber
-it's wall us only half an inch thick but enough force to push blood through aortic valve and into the body
OXY BLOOD
RIGHT ATRIUM
-collects oxygen-poor blood returning from the body and forces it through the tricuspid valve and into right ventricle.
DEOXY BLOOD
RIGHT VENTRICLE
-collects oxygen-poor blood from right atrium and forces it through pulmonary valve and into lungs
DEOXY BLOOD
PULMONARY ARTERY
-carries blood from the heart to lungs to pick up oxygen
DEOXY BLOOD
AORTA
-largest artery
-carries oxygen-rich blood from heart to rest of the body
OXY BLOOD
PULMONARY VEINS
-carry oxygen-rich blood from lungs back to the heart
OXY BLOOD
SUPERIOR VENA CAVA
-oxygen-poor blood from upper parts of body returning to the heart through superior vena cava
DEOXY BLOOD
INFERIOR VENA CAVA
-oxygen-poor blood from lower parts of body return to heart through inferior vena cava
DEOXY BLOOD
ATRIOVENTRICULAR VALVES (Mitral & Tricuspid)
mitral: controls blood flow from left atrium to ventricle
tricuspid: controles blood flow from right atrium to ventricle
mitral: OXY
tricuspid: DEOXY
CHORDAE TENDINAE
-bring right ventricular walls closer together contraction
-pull the AV valves open during atriole systole
left: oxy
right:deoxy
SEMI LUNAR VALVES (Pulmonary & Aortic)
pulmonary: controls blood flow from right ventricle to pulmonary arteries
aortic:controls blood flow from left ventricle to aorta
pulmonary: DEOXY
aortic: OXY
SEPTUM - wall of muscle separating |
CORONARY ARTERIES: The coronary arteries supply blood to its own vascular system called coronary circulation. They supply oxygen-rich blood to the entire heart. These two arteries branch out from the aorta which branch out into smaller blood vessels. The left coronary artery supplies blood to mostly the left side of the heart whereas the right coronary artery supplies blood to the right side. Although, the left side is the largest chamber and needs to pump blood to the rest of the body, the left coronary artery branches into two arteries - left anterior descending artery and circumflex artery.
