Kidneys maintain and filter our blood to produce urine but when UTI progresses to your kidneys, you develop a kidney infection also called Pyelonephritis. It is a serious infection which can spread into the blood and cause a severe illness. There are many symptoms of pyelonephritis like back pains, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting and changes in urine. A women's urethra is shorter than a mans therefore it's more likely for a women to get a kidney infection. You obtain a kidney infection from bacteria like E.Coli or klebsiella and kidney stones, abdominal or pelvic masses. The bacteria travels from the rectum/ vagina towards the urethra and into the urinary system and may also enter from the skin. Sexual intercourse and pregnancy increase the risk factor for an infection. A kidney infection can be classified into three categories; uncomplicated, complicated and chronic.
